Review of "Medical Image Analysis Methods" by Lena Costaridou
نویسنده
چکیده
This book provides a review of various computer vision, image processing and artificial intelligence methods, most of them aimed at assisting diagnostic decision making. Most of the reviewed work revolves around computeraided detection (CAD) in mammography, ranging from the description of the basic structure of a CAD system to a more elaborate exposition of specific methods such as image classification, texture characterization and contrast enhancement. Few other types of topical processing techniques are also reviewed, under some other representative medical imaging modalities.

Microcalcification Features Extracted from Principal Component Analysis in the Wavelet Domain
In presence of dense mammographic parenchyma, microcalcifications (MCs) are obscured by anatomical structures, resulting in missed or/and false detections. Image analysis methods applied to improve visualization, detection and/or characterization of MCs, are targeted to MC SNR improvement and are unavoidably accompanied by MC background overenhancement or false positive (FP) detections. A set o...
متن کاملCapturing Microcalcification Patterns in Dense Parenchyma with Wavelet-Based Eigenimages
A method is proposed based on the combination of wavelet analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). Microcalcification (MC) candidate regions are initially labeled using area and contrast criteria. Mallat’s redundant dyadic wavelet transform is used to analyze the frequency content of image patterns at horizontal and vertical directions. PCA is used to efficiently encode MC patterns in wa...
متن کاملImprovement of microcalcification cluster detection in mammography utilizing image enhancement techniques
In this work, the effect of an image enhancement processing stage and the parameter tuning of a computer-aided detection (CAD) system for the detection of microcalcifications in mammograms is assessed. Five (5) image enhancement algorithms were tested introducing the contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), the local range modification (LRM) and the redundant discrete wavelet (...
متن کاملBreast Component Adaptive Wavelet Enhancement for Soft-Copy Display of Mammograms
A method that performs multiresolution enhancement, adaptive to breast components, for optimal visualization of the entire breast area is presented. The method includes an edge detection step to distinguish breast area from mammogram background and employs Gaussian mixture modeling to segment breast components (uncompressed fat, fat and dense). The original image is decomposed using a redundant...
متن کاملComputerized Image Analysis of Mammographic Microcalcifications: Diagnosis and Prognosis
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today (after lung cancer) and is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women, excluding skin cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated of 230,480 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2011; about 2,140 new cases are expected in men. In addition to invasive breast cancer, 57,650 new cases of...
